Physics has transformed modern life through pioneering innovations and technologies that extend into diverse fields like biology and finance. Our faculty and alumni play a crucial role in this ongoing progress. Numerous professors have earned acclaim for both their teaching excellence and their status as leading global researchers in specialized areas.
The Physics Department's research focuses on key sub-disciplines, including biological and complex systems physics, condensed matter physics, photonics, and geomaterials physics. Students can engage with these specialized fields through coursework and research projects tailored to their chosen program.
Beyond the Honours BSc in Physics, we provide three additional specialized programs. The physics-mathematics track combines advanced mathematical training with physics studies. The photonics option delivers comprehensive physics education alongside practical, industry-focused photonics training. The biological physics specialization equips students to apply physics principles to life sciences. Our Major in Physics serves as a foundation for an Honours BSc when paired with another science major/minor or cross-faculty program. Beginning fall 2016, we'll introduce a distinctive five-year dual degree in physics (BSc) and electrical engineering (BASc), developed in collaboration with SEECS. This integrated program delivers complete training in both fields, preparing graduates for high demand in industry and academia as they'll possess the unique ability to transform fundamental physics concepts into market-ready technologies.
