With the increasing complexity of diagnosing and treating eye conditions (ophthalmic medicine), there's a rising need for healthcare professionals specializing in ophthalmic medical technology. These technologists utilize cutting-edge tools like lasers and advanced imaging systems to deliver excellent patient care.
This bachelor's program begins with two years of fundamental science education, then focuses on ophthalmic technology and visual science in the third and fourth years. Students in these advanced years receive their training at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute, situated within the Ottawa Hospital's main campus, blending practical clinical experience with academic learning.
Admission to the program's third year is highly selective, involving an interview process. Applicants must complete two years of prerequisite coursework (60 units) with at least a 6.0 CGPA. The selection committee evaluates candidates holistically, sometimes considering exceptional science students who haven't fulfilled all prerequisites. Only four students are admitted annually, and meeting minimum requirements doesn't ensure acceptance.
