Mathematics and statistics serve as both essential problem-solving instruments and dynamic areas of study that blend creativity with analytical thinking, merging structured reasoning with instinctive understanding.
Mathematics extends far beyond numerical values Its fundamental purpose is to uncover and simulate universal patterns that help interpret our reality, whether observed in neural electrical activity, wildlife population dynamics, stock market variations, or digital communications. The influence of mathematics stretches well beyond STEM fields into healthcare, commerce, and social sciences.
Progress in mathematics and statistics underpins numerous modern innovations we rely on daily, including medical imaging technology, digital media compression, secure online transactions, big data analysis, genetic sequencing methods, financial derivatives valuation, and countless other advancements.
Our Department provides specialized Honours programs, major and minor concentrations in both mathematics and statistics. The statistics Honours program holds accreditation from the Statistical Society of Canada, enabling graduates to obtain the A.Stat. professional certification. Additionally, we offer combined Honours programs in mathematics-economics and mathematics-computer science, along with an interdisciplinary program in financial mathematics and economics. All Honours programs incorporate cooperative education opportunities.
Have you pondered why economic disparities exist between nations? Curious about the causes of increasing wealth inequality? Wondered why financial crises abroad concern Canadian policymakers? Economics provides answers to these pressing questions.
Economics analyzes decision-making processes by individuals and societies facing scarce resources. It investigates the creation, allocation, and utilization of goods and services, emphasizing two key principles: optimal resource utilization (efficiency) and equitable distribution (fairness). As choice-making permeates all human endeavors, economics frequently explains behavioral patterns in people and governments.
