Mathematics and statistics serve as both robust tools for solving problems and dynamic areas of study that blend creativity with analytical thinking, merging exactness with instinct. Mathematics extends far beyond mere numerical concepts—its fundamental purpose is to uncover and simulate broad patterns that help interpret our world. These patterns may appear in neural electrical activity, wildlife population changes in ecosystems, stock market variations, or digital communications. The influence of mathematics stretches well beyond science and engineering into healthcare, commerce, and social sciences. Breakthroughs in mathematics and statistics underpin numerous modern innovations we rely on daily, including medical imaging technology, audio and video compression, encrypted digital exchanges, data analysis, genetic sequencing methods, financial forecasting, and more. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides Honours, major, and minor programs in both disciplines. Our statistics Honours program is recognized by the Statistical Society of Canada, enabling graduates to obtain the A.Stat. professional credential. Additionally, the Department features combined Honours programs in mathematics and economics, mathematics and computer science, plus an interdisciplinary program in financial mathematics and economics. All Honours programs also offer a co-operative education pathway.
