Geology is a contemporary, vibrant, and multifaceted field of science focused on studying the makeup and development of Earth and other celestial bodies.
Geologists and Earth scientists examine our planet's chemical, physical, and biological transformations. Our curriculum equips students with skills to evaluate Earth materials, explore its layers from crust to core, and simulate the forces that formed and molded its oceans and landmasses. The Ottawa area serves as an ideal outdoor classroom where students explore resources (water, metals, minerals, fossil fuels), natural threats (seismic activity, tidal waves, volcanic events, slope failures), and diverse geological settings.
The Earth and Environmental Sciences Department provides geology programs and, in collaboration with the Physics Department, a combined geology-physics program. These curricula blend hands-on fieldwork with theoretical and analytical studies addressing societal challenges. The culminating year features either an independent research endeavor or equivalent advanced coursework units in the field.
