Mathematics and statistics serve as both effective problem-solving instruments and dynamic areas of study that blend creativity with analytical thinking, merging exactness with instinct. Math extends far beyond numerical values—its fundamental purpose is to uncover and simulate universal patterns that help interpret our world, whether observed in neural electrical activity, wildlife population changes in ecosystems, stock market variations, or digital communications. The influence of mathematics stretches well beyond STEM fields into healthcare, commerce, and social sciences.
Progress in mathematics and statistics underpins numerous innovations integrated into modern life, including medical imaging technology, audio-visual data compression, encrypted digital communications, information analysis, genetic sequencing methods, financial derivatives valuation, and countless other advancements.
Our Mathematics and Statistics Department provides specialized tracks including Honours degrees, majors, and minors in both disciplines. The statistics Honours program holds accreditation from the Statistical Society of Canada, enabling graduates to obtain the A.Stat. professional certification. Additionally, we feature combined Honours programs pairing mathematics with economics or computer science, along with an interdisciplinary financial mathematics and economics program. All Honours programs incorporate cooperative education opportunities as well.
