This Certificate offers an in-depth examination of municipal governance in Canada, particularly within British Columbia. The program enhances UNBC's degree offerings and equips students with skills for careers in municipal administration, public policy, urban planning, and community economic development. Several courses fulfill provincial certification requirements for local government professionals.
Rooted in Political Science and Environmental Planning disciplines, the Local Government Administration Certificate comprises 10 courses (30 credits), including four electives. Students select electives from two specialization tracks: Policy/Administration or Planning/Economic Development. Participants may focus on one specialization (taking four courses from one track) or pursue a generalist approach (combining two courses from each track). All prerequisite courses must be completed before enrolling in certificate electives.
The Certificate can be completed independently or alongside a degree program. Admission requirements mirror UNBC's general undergraduate standards. Transfer credits may be applied to the Certificate, up to a maximum of 15 credit hours where applicable.
