Chemistry examines the fundamental elements that make up all substances in the universe. Our daily environment — from the atmosphere we inhale to the liquids we consume, the meals we enjoy, the vehicles we operate, and even our own physical forms — consists of these elemental building blocks.

The field of chemistry comprises five principal disciplines:

analytical chemistry specializes in identifying and quantifying chemical components, with applications in areas such as criminal investigations.
organic chemistry concentrates on carbon-based compounds that form the basis of biological organisms.
inorganic chemistry investigates all other elements, predominantly those occurring in mineral formations.
physical chemistry examines the core principles that dictate how matter behaves.
theoretical chemistry establishes conceptual models based on fundamental physics, including quantum theory, to explain all chemical processes.
This program emphasizes comprehensive theoretical understanding across all five disciplines while developing practical competencies through experiential learning. Students will gain rigorous laboratory training in chemical transformations and safety protocols, along with practical experience using sophisticated analytical methods like elemental analysis, spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, crystallography, and mass spectrometry.

Chemistry majors benefit from cutting-edge research laboratories that facilitate the innovative work of our distinguished faculty members. These instructors explore varied chemical science domains including catalytic processes, nanostructured materials, and the chemistry of food substances.
