The Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics provides courses in three languages: French, Japanese, and Spanish (from introductory to advanced levels). In our interconnected world, modern language students develop skills to engage with international communities beyond English-speaking regions. Studying modern languages goes beyond mere communication—it involves discovering different perspectives, traditions, and worldviews through linguistic, literary, historical, and cultural exploration.
With intimate class settings, creative teaching approaches, and cutting-edge language technology, we create an engaging and rewarding learning environment. At foundational and intermediate stages, we focus on developing conversational and written fluency while immersing students in the cultural contexts of French and Spanish speakers, including their media, arts, and literature. Advanced learners can further refine their French and Spanish proficiency. All instruction is conducted in the target language. Students pursuing French or Spanish will deepen their cultural understanding through language studies, literary analysis, civilization courses, and potential study abroad opportunities in Canada or internationally.
