The Environment, Food, and Communities specialization explores sociological perspectives on human-environment relationships. This concentration examines diverse topics including natural resource management, sustainable food systems, and equitable community development.
Students in this specialization will employ various research methodologies, particularly comparative and historical analysis. The curriculum emphasizes how structural factors like power dynamics, cultural influences, and intersecting identities (including class, gender, race, and ethnicity) shape these societal-ecological systems.
Collaborate with exceptional graduate students from diverse backgrounds as you investigate societal structures with practical applications for enhancing quality of life. Our program enables you to apply theoretical knowledge and research skills to contemporary social challenges through four specialized tracks: environment/food/communities; work/organization; crime/social control; and identities/social inclusion. Beyond these core specializations, our faculty pursue cutting-edge research across numerous compelling sociological domains.
As an ambitious PhD candidate in sociology, you'll encounter stimulating academic and professional opportunities through rigorous coursework, seminars, comprehensive exams, teaching/research positions, academic conferences, and dissertation development.
