The PhD Program in Rural Studies provides in-depth exploration of rural communities' and regions' socio-cultural and environmental sustainability. Our faculty conduct both theoretical research and practical applications across Canada and globally, drawing expertise from diverse fields such as urban planning, landscape design, political sciences, public policy, human geography, continuing education, and media studies. To earn the doctorate, candidates must complete 2.00 graduate-level course credits, followed by composing and defending a qualifying examination paper, then developing and publicly defending an original research thesis. The curriculum is structured for completion within 12 academic terms.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants must have a master's degree (or the equivalent) from a recognized university in the humanities, socialscience, or applied-science disciplines. Admission to the doctoral program requires a satisfactory baccalaureate and a B average in a recognized master's program. Applicants are strongly encouraged to communicate with a potential faculty advisor before applying. All applicants are expected to submit a completed background questionnaire.
