The Master of Science in Forestry (MSc) is a thesis-driven graduate program emphasizing research. Candidates develop specialized research skills while actively expanding academic understanding in their field. MSc Forestry students typically concentrate on addressing particular challenges through focused study, with most completing their degrees in 2-3 years.
Our program maintains an enrollment of 85-95 thesis-based master's candidates annually, representing roughly 30% of Forestry's total graduate student body. MSc students belong to both the Faculty of Forestry and one of our three departmental units, determined by their faculty advisor's specialization.
The Faculty provides world-class instruction and pioneering research across diverse forestry disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Students conduct research alongside distinguished scholars using advanced facilities in the Forest Sciences Centre and at our two research forests. As one of UBC's largest graduate programs, we host over 300 students across seven degree options, with international students from more than 40 countries enriching our academic community. This global perspective prepares graduates to become the internationally-minded professionals that UBC strives to cultivate, reflecting forestry's increasingly worldwide scope.
Applicants for a master's degree program must hold the academic equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree from UBC with: a minimum overall average in the B+ grade range (76-79% at UBC) in third-year level and above courses; or academic standing with at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study; or applicants who have a four-year bachelor's degree, or its academic equivalent, which does not meet the requirements stated above, but who have had significant formal training and relevant professional experience to offset such deficiencies, may be granted admission on the recommendation of the appropriate graduate program or faculty and approval of the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
Admission to the Master of Science (MSc) program requires an academic background in science, applied science, agricultural sciences, social science or forestry.
