Vancouver's economy relies heavily on film production, a thriving industry in cities worldwide. For more than four decades, UBC has cultivated many of Canada's (and the world's) most talented filmmakers and technical experts. The MFA in Film Production emphasizes directing, screenwriting, and producing for narrative or documentary films, catering to experienced filmmakers seeking to refine their artistic or academic vision. The Joint MFA in Film Production and Creative Writing provides the same core film training while deepening screenwriting skills through the Creative Writing program, requiring students to script their thesis films. Alumni and student projects have been featured at international film festivals, with graduates contributing to acclaimed works like District 9, 65 Red_Roses, and The Editor.
Applicants to the MFA in Film Production and Creative Writing require, as a prerequisite, an undergraduate degree in film or video production or the equivalent in experience.
