The connections between knowledge, culture, and authority form a central research interest for numerous faculty and researchers.
UBC's sociology program boasts a rich tradition of community-engaged learning initiatives, offering students practical research opportunities with local Vancouver organizations (such as RainCity Housing, SPEC, City of Vancouver, Neighborhood House Association, and Be The Change). The department maintains a robust co-op program and jointly operates the Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School with the Anthropology Department. Gender and sexuality sociologists investigate evolving gender dynamics and sexual identity formations across different historical periods and geographical contexts.
