Psychology is a multifaceted field dedicated to exploring the foundations of human behavior, mental processes, and feelings. At UBC, psychology began as a solitary course in 1915, originally taught within the Philosophy Department. As time progressed, both course offerings and faculty expanded, leading to the establishment of the standalone Department of Psychology in 1958.
Our social and personality division focuses on diverse research subjects such as well-being, interpersonal relationships, social perception, individual traits, emotional experiences, self-control, biases, and how religious beliefs, cultural norms, and evolutionary factors shape behavior.
