The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) program explores the social, linguistic, educational, cognitive, cultural, and political factors influencing how English is taught, learned, evaluated, and utilized as an additional language worldwide. TESL graduate students develop expertise in key areas including: contemporary TESL theories and practices, second language acquisition processes, literacy development in additional languages, language socialization, identity and language relationships, assessment techniques, discourse studies, critical applied linguistics, and research methodologies.
Faculty members specialize in diverse aspects of TESL, including instructional methods, applied linguistics, language acquisition and socialization, content-based instruction, grammatical pedagogy, second language composition, identity and language connections, educational linguistics, multilingual literacy development, language policy studies, and English usage in immigrant and global contexts. The program additionally co-administers the collaborative UBC/Ritsumeikan Academic Exchange Initiative.
