Our program immerses students in independent research while expanding their engagement with specialized areas of Geography. Students can explore research topics across these key sub-disciplines: Biogeography, Climate Studies, Economic Geography, Environmental Sustainability, Gender and Geography, GIS Technology, Landform Processes, Historical Geography, Water Systems and Glaciers, Indigenous Land Studies, Political Geography, Sociocultural Geography, and Urban Studies.

The PhD program offers adaptable, research-focused learning tailored to each student's goals. Participants from diverse academic backgrounds receive guidance from leading experts in physical geography, human geography, and geospatial technologies. Graduates develop specialized knowledge that prepares them for academic positions, government roles, corporate opportunities, or NGO careers within their chosen research field.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B plus range (76% at UBC).

IELTS - A minimum overall band score of 7.0 is required with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component.
TOEFL IBT - 100 for the internet-based exam with minimum component scores of 22 (reading, listening) and 21 (writing, speaking).
