UBC's economics Ph.D. program excels due to its distinguished research faculty, abundant opportunities for collaboration between students and professors, and a broad selection of specialization areas for dissertation research. Faculty expertise spans numerous fields such as development economics, economic history, econometrics (both applied and theoretical), gender and inequality studies, environmental economics, industrial organization, international finance and trade, labor economics, macroeconomics, microeconomic theory and applications, political economy, and public finance.
Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in economics. However, students with outstanding records in undergraduate honours programs in economics may be admitted directly; such students should have demonstrated success in intermediate and upper-level undergraduate courses in economic theory, mathematics, statistics and econometrics. All applicants are expected to have demonstrated ability to undertake advanced studies and independent research.
