Transportation Engineering research forms a core aspect of Civil Engineering studies and significantly contributes to the academic program. Graduate students, serving as essential contributors to these research initiatives, often secure positions as research assistants during their degree programs.
The Department's research approach highlights the multidisciplinary aspects of Transportation Engineering while fostering focused investigations in specialized fields. Key research domains include: traffic safety, urban mobility planning, and smart transportation technologies. Ongoing projects cover areas such as roadway safety, commercial vehicle impacts, traffic simulation models, transportation infrastructure, travel demand analysis, ecological effects of transport systems, and advanced transportation technologies.
The Transportation Research Group maintains collaborative projects with the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Highways, focusing on roadway design and safety improvements. Additional partnerships exist with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. The Group also participates in a vehicle testing program managed by the Pacific Education Training Centre.
