Biochemistry explores the chemical reactions within living organisms, covering a vast range of scientific investigations that impact nearly every facet of modern life. Professionals in this field contribute to diverse sectors including environmental conservation, criminal investigations, medical advancements, and historical studies.
This discipline examines the molecular components and metabolic pathways present in plants, animals, and microbes. It particularly focuses on studying proteins, sugars, and fats - the fundamental building blocks of cellular structures.
The program offers comprehensive training in biochemical principles while allowing students to explore related disciplines such as microbial studies, nutritional science, and chemical analysis. A bachelor's degree in biochemistry serves as excellent preparation for those pursuing careers in healthcare or scientific research.
Students can pursue biochemistry as either a primary concentration or an advanced honors program at the undergraduate level. It also combines effectively with chemistry for dual-degree options.
Administered through the Medical School, the curriculum emphasizes human biochemistry. Additionally, students can select biochemistry courses as electives within various life science programs including biological sciences, chemical studies, microbial research, and cellular biology.
