This teacher training program focuses on educational challenges in public and First Nations schools serving Indigenous students. You'll gain essential teaching skills and theoretical knowledge, specialize in Indigenous Education, and qualify to teach across all grade levels from elementary through high school.
NITEP offers a Bachelor of Education degree specifically designed for Indigenous students pursuing teaching careers. The program strengthens cultural identity while equipping future educators with the tools to teach effectively in British Columbia's public, band-operated, and independent schools.
Throughout their studies, NITEP participants complete coursework in arts, sciences, and education. The initial two to three years are delivered through regional centers, allowing students to stay connected to their home communities while maintaining cultural ties. While following the same curriculum requirements as standard teacher education programs, NITEP presents them in a modified sequence and incorporates specialized courses on Indigenous educational approaches, content, and teaching methods.
