Linguistics is an interdisciplinary domain that integrates research approaches from humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics to examine human language. It involves the methodical investigation of language mechanics. Experts in this field analyze sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the connection between structure and meaning (morphology, syntax, and semantics), and language evolution across time.
In foundational Linguistics classes, students explore language structures by examining data from structurally diverse languages. While English is typically studied, other languages such as Cantonese, Indigenous languages of the region, Latin, or Haitian Creole may also be included.
