The Department of Medicine (DOM) has identified Translational Research (TR) as a key focus area. TR enables the practical application of molecular breakthroughs to benefit real patients and communities. This approach demands innovative thinking throughout the entire process - from initial laboratory findings in animal studies to government-approved human treatments after rigorous clinical trials. TR plays a vital role in Precision Medicine, an emerging field focused on developing personalized treatments tailored to individual patients rather than using standardized approaches. Effective personalized treatment requires deep understanding of the unique molecular and genetic characteristics that differentiate patients. Both Precision Medicine and Translational Medicine have become central priorities for the DOM and FOMD.

Qualification Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’s (FoMD’s) Graduate Programs (See FoMD Graduate Programs) are outlined below. Admissions to FoMD graduate programs are made on a competitive basis. Though an applicant may satisfy the minimum admission requirements, acceptance into a graduate program is not guaranteed. The decision to admit an applicant to a graduate program is made by the department and program. Graduate program entrance requirements for FoMD Graduate Programs are defined at two different levels: The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) sets the minimum entrance requirements that must be met by all graduate students at the UofA, regardless of program. FoMD has entrance requirements over and above those set by GPS that must be met by graduate students in all the FoMD graduate programs. The minimum English language proficiency test scores required for admission into the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’s Graduate Programs are: TOEFL (internet-based): A minimum overall score of 95 with a minimum of 21 on each individual skill area. Academic IELTS: A minimum overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each band. EAP 550 (EXELP 7550): Successful completion of the EAP 550 course will fulfill the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’s Graduate Programs.
