The Faculty of Law provides graduate programs culminating in either a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Laws (LLM) degree. Additionally, it features collaborative programs with the Faculty of Business, offering an integrated MBA-JD curriculum. The LLM is a twelve-month research-focused program designed for legal professionals, scholars, and students to refine their legal knowledge and undertake in-depth research. Candidates must develop and defend a thesis, showcasing mastery of academic literature and the capacity to produce novel scholarly work in their chosen area.

Alumni of our LLM program have advanced to doctoral studies, academic roles, or successful careers in law firms, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

Qualification Requirements

For the LLM, the Faculty's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate JD or LLB degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.
