The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering provides specialized facilities for graduate education and research, offering Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering. Degree programs cover Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Process Control, and Welding Engineering (excluding PhD level for Welding). The MEng program is designed mainly for industry professionals studying part-time, though full-time students may also enroll.
Chemical engineering research areas encompass fluid dynamics and rheology; reaction kinetics and catalytic processes; mass transfer and separation techniques; thermal energy transfer; thermodynamic studies including hydrocarbon phase behavior; polymer reactor systems; computerized process control; dynamic system simulation; biotechnological applications, mathematical modeling, and environmental engineering solutions. Numerous research initiatives focus on optimizing Alberta's natural resource utilization, such as enhancing Athabasca bitumen and heavy oil processing, along with natural gas refinement technologies.
