The Department provides research opportunities at multiple facilities including the Ray Rajotte Surgical-Medical Research Institute (SMRI), Alberta Diabetes Institute, Heritage Medical Research Centre [HMRC Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation (LKS)], Medical Sciences Building (MSB), Katz Building, and Cross Cancer Institute for students pursuing MSc or PhD degrees in Surgery.
Graduate researchers have access to core resources such as operating rooms, simulation labs, electron microscopy, clinical biochemistry and histology labs, along with computer graphics and photography services. Technical support staff are available in these labs to assist with research initiatives. These well-equipped spaces support both basic science and clinical research within the Department of Surgery.
Current research projects utilizing these facilities include: pancreatic islet transplantation, diabetes immunology, perinatal physiology, burn wound recovery, cross-species transplantation, stem cell therapies and regenerative medicine, immune tolerance development, virology studies, brain tumor research, orthopedic investigations, surgical training methods, urologic cancers, organ preservation and transplant techniques, as well as surgical simulation and education advancements.
