To earn a PhD degree, candidates must meet minimum coursework requirements, pass both the Entrance Year and Candidacy Exam, and produce an original PhD thesis (making a substantial research contribution to their field). This thesis must then be defended successfully in a final oral examination. The University of Alberta's Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences conducts diverse research projects, educational programs, and community engagement initiatives.

Qualification Requirements

To be admitted into the Doctoral Program, a student must:

Satisfy the minimum requirements for entrance into an MSc degree (the GPA calculation will be done using the last *60 credits or two years of undergraduate and/or graduate work at the University of Alberta or its academic equivalent from a recognized institution).
Hold an MSc degree in Mathematics or Statistics (depending on the choice of PhD program), or a closely related area.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Score - Minimum score of 100 (internet based), with a score of at least 22 in each individual skills area. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Score - Minimum score of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 on each band for admission. The IELTS test must be the academic module.
