The Department of Biochemistry provides graduate programs for both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, each demanding original research and thesis development.
Our department aims to cultivate scientists with comprehensive expertise in biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology while fostering critical thinkers with strong communication skills.
Students benefit from an internationally recognized training environment covering diverse research areas.
The Department serves as the central hub for several research groups including Membrane Protein Research, Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, and Signal Transduction Research. Faculty members actively participate in numerous prestigious institutes such as the Centre for Prion and Protein Folding Diseases, Cardiovascular Research Centre (CVRC), Alberta Diabetes Institute, Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI), and the International Research Training Group (IRTG) in Membrane Protein Diseases.
The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.
English Language Requirement:
The deadlines for submitting applications for admission are July 1 for September admission and November 1 for January admission.
