Have you ever considered pursuing a career as a Physical Education instructor? The Bachelor of Secondary Education offers Physical Education as either a primary or secondary specialization. Key study areas encompass Sports and Physical Education, Health Studies, Leisure and Recreation, and Active Living. Alternatively, you can opt for a combined Bachelor of Kinesiology and Bachelor of Education degree. This pathway is tailored for individuals with existing university qualifications. The duration of this after-degree program depends on the transferability of your prior academic credits. You can complete this program either at the University of Alberta or through our Collaborative Off-Campus Program at partner institutions.

Our Faculty of Education's Secondary Education program equips you to share your enthusiasm for knowledge across various subjects with middle and high school students (grades 7-12). You'll select two focus areas—a primary and secondary specialization—enabling you to follow your interests and personalize your educational journey. The program features a five-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) followed by a nine-week Advanced Professional Term (APT), with teaching typically centered around your primary specialization. While designed as a four-year course, this degree can also be pursued as an after-degree. Graduates receive recommendation for Alberta teaching certification upon completion.

Qualification Requirements

A three- or four-year degree from an accredited postsecondary institution

An Admission GPA (AGPA) of at least 2.0, or equivalent, based on the most recent graded and transferable ‚òÖ24. The length of the program will depend on the courses that a student presents at the time of admission. The Secondary After Degree program length will depend on the courses presented at the time of admission.

Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 30-2 are not necessary for admission to the Faculty of Education After Degree although Mathematics 30-1 may be a prerequisites for some required courses.
