Students can pursue ELA as either a major or minor within the Bachelor of Secondary Education program. The curriculum covers diverse fields such as English Literature, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Writing Studies, Drama, and Film and Media Studies. Teaching is more than a profession—it's a vocation, and we're committed to shaping educators who will leave a lasting impact on their students. Through our Secondary Education program in the Faculty of Education, you'll gain the skills to inspire grades 7-12 students across various subjects. The program lets you select two specialization areas (a major and minor) to tailor your educational journey. It features a five-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) and a nine-week Advanced Professional Term (APT), with teaching typically focused on your major subject during both terms. While designed as a four-year program, it's also available as an after-degree option. Graduates qualify for Alberta teacher certification upon completion.
All Applicants must present the following:
A three- or four-year degree from an accredited postsecondary institution
An Admission GPA (AGPA) of at least 2.0, or equivalent, based on the most recent graded and transferable ‚òÖ24. The length of the program will depend on the courses that a student presents at the time of admission. The Secondary After Degree program length will depend on the courses presented at the time of admission.
Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 30-2 are not necessary for admission to the Faculty of Education After Degree although Mathematics 30-1 may be a prerequisites for some required courses.
Submission of the Casper test is required to be evaluated for Admission to the program. More information on the Casper test requirement, dates and deadlines can be found at Faculty of Education
