Our French program equips students with fundamental reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension skills while fostering an appreciation for Francophone cultures. The curriculum takes students on a global journey through the historical and contemporary cultures of France, Quebec, other French Canadian regions, and French-speaking nations worldwide. We provide instruction at all language proficiency levels, with two specialized tracks available: French studies and French language & literature. Both pathways can lead to a minor or concentration in French. Students completing at least five French courses without pursuing a full minor can earn a Letter of Proficiency. Summer study abroad opportunities in France or Quebec enhance the learning experience.
Trinity Western University's World Languages & Cultures (WLC) Department collaborates with the Linguistics Department to offer a BA in language and linguistics. This program combines linguistics coursework with intensive study in one of WLC's offered languages: French, Spanish, or Chinese. The major requires 42 semester hours, consisting of a 24 s.h. minor in either linguistics or the chosen language, plus 18 s.h. in the complementary field. Students may opt to complete a second minor by dedicating 6 additional s.h. from their general electives to their secondary focus. This unique combination of linguistic theory and cultural immersion creates versatile language specialists capable of analyzing their target language's complexities while developing transferable skills for learning additional languages.
