The Adventure Guide Diploma is an intensive two-year program combining hands-on field experiences, outdoor skill development, and independent expeditions. Students explore diverse adventure disciplines and theoretical concepts, with field-based learning accounting for 60% of the curriculum.

This 60-credit qualification includes 36 mandatory credits and 24 elective credits. The diploma offers pathways into Adventure Studies specializations within either the Bachelor of Tourism Management (BTM) or Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degrees for those pursuing further education.

Highly valued in the adventure tourism sector, this diploma prepares graduates for immediate industry employment. Industry partners actively contribute through training opportunities, certification support, and professional networking. Alumni pursue careers as wilderness leaders, outdoor educators, and specialized guides in mountain or river environments.

Qualification Requirements

  • 19 years of age at the start of the program
  • Completion of the Adventure Guide Certificate
  • Application to the second year of the Adventure Guide Diploma in writing outlining the following:
    • Enclose a personal resume and cover letter explaining why you wish to move into the program and how the program will help you attain your goals.
    • Briefly outline the skills and experiences you gained in the Adventure Guide Certificate and how these have had a positive effect on your learning, leadership, professionalism, your peers, instructors and the program as a whole.
    • Include your summer work practicum plans and how they fit into your educational and career goals.
    • Fill out and submit an Outdoor Experience Log. This log should contain all outdoor experiences outside of course time during the past year.
    • The department will review and consider student transcripts and GPA for the last year.
  • Applicants are required to attend a Departmental Orientation session (in person or by phone), complete the Adventure Guide Diploma Application form, and attend an admissions interview.

English Language Proficiency Requirements: TOEFL iBT - 88+ with no section below 20; TOEFL paper-based - 570+ TWE 4.5+; TOEFL Computer-Based - 230+ Essay 4.5+; IELTS - 6.5+ with no bands below 6.0; MELAB - 81+; CanTEST - 4.5+ with no component score below 4.0; CAEL - Overall 70+ No subtest below 60.

Deadlines for students of pre-assessment eligible nationalities (Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Iran and Nigeria): Fall: February 15, 2024. Deadlines for students of all other nationalities: Fall: March 1, 2024; Winter 2025: September 1, 2024.
