The Native Studies Department employs historical materialist approaches to analyze both historical and modern challenges in Indigenous communities' fight for self-determination against colonial powers like Canada and the U.S. Our program enables students to investigate the past and present realities of North America's First Nations. Additionally, we provide a Native Language Immersion Teaching Certificate under the guidance of Professor Emerita Andrea Bear Nicholas.
