Gerontology explores the multifaceted aspects of aging through psychological, sociological, physical, spiritual, and philosophical lenses. This field investigates both the aging process itself and how society and individuals perceive later life stages. STU's Gerontology program is unique in Atlantic Canada as one of only two independent programs available. By integrating courses from Psychology, Sociology, and Women's and Gender Studies, this interdisciplinary approach helps students grasp the complexities of aging and human development from various viewpoints. The program features intimate, interactive classes that foster discussion and critical thinking.
Degree options include a Bachelor of Arts with a Gerontology major or minor, a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Gerontology (collaboratively offered with NBCC), or a Gerontology Certificate.
All instruction is delivered directly by faculty members—never by teaching assistants—ensuring students learn from seasoned professionals.
The Third Age Centre, located at STU, operates as an independent non-profit dedicated to promoting healthy, independent living for seniors. Gerontology students have opportunities to engage in the Centre's initiatives.
