Political engagement plays a vital role in tackling collective societal issues, with political science revealing the fundamental mechanisms that influence and limit authority and governance. As a Political Science student at StFX, you'll examine the exercise of power in political systems and civic affairs. This includes evaluating governmental frameworks, historical political developments, and the impact of concepts and belief systems on politics at both domestic and international levels.
StFX's Political Science department fosters a vibrant academic atmosphere where scholarship and instruction thrive in tandem. Here, you'll find an encouraging space to discuss pressing contemporary matters both inside and outside lecture halls, deepening your grasp of political dynamics. The program offers ample opportunities for meaningful interaction with faculty and peers within a supportive, approachable learning environment.
Consult the Academic Calendar for degree requirements. Those pursuing an advanced major in political science must select courses in coordination with the department chair or an assigned advisor. The curriculum includes PSCI 100 (101 & 102), 399, a minimum of two three-credit seminars, and a senior thesis. Students typically specialize in two subfields, completing at least 18 credits at the 300+ level, including PSCI 399 or 397 plus two seminars. For joint advanced majors, all requirements apply, with the senior paper mandatory when political science is the primary focus (major 1).
