Politics plays a vital role in tackling collective societal issues, with political science revealing the fundamental dynamics that influence and limit governmental authority. As a Political Science student at StFX, you'll examine the exercise of power in political systems and public affairs. This includes studying governmental frameworks, historical political developments, and the impact of ideologies on both national and international politics.

StFX's Political Science department fosters an energetic academic atmosphere where teaching and research thrive side by side. Here, you'll engage in lively discussions about contemporary political matters, both inside and outside the classroom, to deepen your grasp of global political dynamics. The program offers intimate interaction with faculty and peers within a supportive, welcoming learning environment.

StFX provides opportunities to major in political science through various degree paths, including advanced majors, honors programs, and combined degree options with supplementary subjects. The curriculum divides into four key areas:

Political Theory‚ÄØexplores foundational political philosophies and modern discussions surrounding liberty, fairness, rights, identity, society, and justice.
Canadian Government and Politics‚ÄØfocuses on Canada's political landscape, its governmental operations, and how global forces shape domestic policies.
Comparative Politics‚ÄØinvestigates governmental structures across nations, highlighting contrasts and parallels between political systems in various global regions.
International Relations‚ÄØanalyzes global political interactions, including state-to-state relations and the role of international institutions, while examining the economic, cultural, and strategic factors that shape world affairs.
