At StFX Modern Languages, students have the opportunity to study French, Spanish, German, or Mi'kmaq while exploring the connection between language and culture. The department provides comprehensive programs in language education, cultural studies, writing skills, and literary analysis spanning different historical periods. All faculty members in StFX Modern Languages hold doctoral qualifications and conduct small class sessions, creating an optimal setting for personalized language acquisition. Through the unique Service Learning initiative, students can apply their academic learning in real-world community settings both locally and internationally.
Students may earn a French proficiency certificate to formally document their language skills on academic records. Given French's status as an official Canadian language, bilingualism can enhance career prospects post-graduation. Annually, outstanding Modern Languages students receive prestigious awards from various international embassies. Additionally, StFX facilitates immersive study abroad experiences in France or Mexico through exchange programs and service learning opportunities.
Applicants must have English and four university preparatory courses in grade 12.
Students with an IELTS score of 6.5 and no band below 6.0 will be deemed to have satisfied the English language requirements for admissions to undergraduate programs. Other acceptable tests include: MELAB (minimum score required is 90), TOEFL iBT (minimum score required is 90 and no lower than 20 in each band), CAEL (minimum score required is 71), CAE (minimum score required is 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band.
