Our Master's Program features three distinct pathways – thesis-focused, project-focused, and course-focused options. Each pathway mandates the completion of 35 units and is designed to span two years (six academic terms). Admitted students receive guidance on which pathway(s) they may pursue, and switching between pathways requires formal approval from both the faculty advisor and Graduate Program Chair.
The Linguistics Department at Simon Fraser University provides graduate studies culminating in MA and PhD degrees. Graduate candidates enroll in courses, may secure positions as teaching or research assistants, and participate in scholarly investigations that may result in thesis or dissertation projects for some students.

Starting Fall 2023, we're enhancing our Master's program with three specialized pathways to better serve students' varied academic goals. Some candidates will combine coursework with thesis work, others will pair coursework with a practical project, while some will focus exclusively on coursework.

Linguistics research at SFU is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach, methodological diversity, and varied theoretical frameworks. Our faculty members specialize in core disciplines while maintaining active research interests in complementary areas that enrich their primary fields of study.
