The Biology Department at Queen's University stands as one of the campus's most extensive academic units, supporting around 100 graduate students guided by 32 faculty members. Research spans diverse areas such as Animal Physiology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour, and Plant Sciences. We provide a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum within one of Canada's premier Biology departments. Our cutting-edge facilities support research in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, ecology, and evolutionary studies, featuring advanced resources like a confocal microscopy suite, DNA sequencing services, aquatic research labs, and a modern phytotron. Nearby, our expansive field station—spanning over 3200 hectares of forests, fields, and lakes—offers exceptional research infrastructure and accommodations. Students gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art labs, including the Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL) and the Queen’s University Biology Station (QUBS). Collaborative opportunities extend to departments such as Geology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, and Mathematics & Statistics. Approximately one-third of our students conduct fieldwork or research at institutions across Canada or internationally. Graduate students regularly present at regional, national, and global conferences, while many research teams undertake fieldwork at locations ranging from our QUBS facility to remote sites like the Arctic, Australia, and tropical regions of Latin America.
Upper second class standing (B+ - 75% - 3.3/4.3 GPA) in an Honour’s Bachelor Arts & Sciences program. Some students may need to take additional courses.
English language requirements
If required, international students TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or TOEFL iBT minimum scores of: writing (24/30); speaking (22/30); reading (22/30); listening (20/30), for a total of 88/120. MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
