The department provides two Master of Arts options: a one-year MA in Political Studies. Queen's Political Theory focus centers on modern normative theory, blending analytical and critical continental approaches. Scholars in this area explore diverse subjects such as: equality and fair distribution; dynamics of power, oppression, and dissent; identity politics and cultural diversity; democratic systems and constitutional frameworks; theoretical ideals versus practical realities; ethical issues in health sciences, well-being, and aging; gender, sexuality, and trans rights movements; feminist and queer perspectives; national identity and land claims; global ethics and universal justice; moral philosophy including neutrality, perfectionism, and virtue ethics; political liberalism and rational public discourse; variations of liberal thought across the political spectrum. This vibrant academic community secures substantial research funding and enjoys increasing recognition within Canada and abroad.

Qualification Requirements

M.A.: Four (4) year undergraduate degree in political science, or an equivalent with an minimum B+ average

For international students, if required, an IELTS score of 7.0 on the Academic module, or a TOEFL total score of at least 600 (paper-based) or TOEFL iBT minimum scores of: writing (24/30), speaking (22/30), reading (22/30), listening (20/30), for a total of 88/120. Applicants must have the minimum TOEFL score in each test as well as the minimum overall score. Two academic references , Photocopies of official transcripts can be uploaded to the online application as PDF files. If a transcript or transcripts cannot be successfully uploaded to the online application, you are responsible for ensuring that an official transcript or transcripts of all current and previous university-level studies are sent to the School of Graduate Studies by all universities previously attended. All applicants (MA and PhD) must submit a writing sample. It should be a recent essay approximately 15-20 pages in length. MA applicants should briefly outline their main research interests, approximately 200 words.
