The department provides two Master's programs, including a one-year MA in Political Studies. Gender and Politics represents our most recent graduate specialization. Discussions surrounding Gender and Politics have increasingly engaged social and political thinkers in recent decades, influencing all social science disciplines. Currently, Gender and Politics stands as one of the most dynamic areas within Political Science. This specialization examines power dynamics and governance through a lens that views gender, alongside other identity factors, as socially and politically shaped constructs. Key topics explored in Gender and Politics include: disparities between men and women in political, economic, and social spheres; implications of same-sex marriage legislation and associated discussions; how gender influences public attitudes, political actions, electoral candidacies, and political messaging; the application of feminist theory to historical and modern issues of justice, authority, and power; the significance of gender identity, transgender issues, sexual orientation, and sexuality; institutional analysis through a gender perspective, including governments, international bodies, bureaucracies, military organizations, political groups, activist movements, and labor unions; gender-based examination of development issues, global conflicts, international integration, migration patterns, and citizenship concepts; and gender considerations in public policy formulation across Canadian and international contexts.
