The Department of Mathematics and Statistics boasts an exceptional team of faculty researchers renowned worldwide for their expertise in diverse specialties. Their work spans multiple disciplines such as pure mathematics (covering algebra, algebraic geometry, analysis, dynamical systems, number theory, and probability), mathematical physics, engineering applications (including control theory and information/communication theory), mathematical biology, along with both theoretical and applied statistics. A vibrant community of graduate students from Canada and beyond further energizes the research atmosphere. Strong interdisciplinary connections exist between Mathematics and Engineering faculty, particularly in communications and control theory, with colleagues from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Additional collaborative efforts focus on biostatistics, involving joint appointments with the Clinical Trials Group in Health Sciences. The department's research initiatives benefit significantly from its close association with Kingston's Royal Military College.
