The Sociology Department at Queen's University emphasizes rigorous social analysis and comprehensive research, providing students with demanding projects and top-tier resources to accomplish them. Our professors are distinguished scholars with national or global recognition, yet remain accessible, fostering supportive, mentoring connections with students. We are affiliated with The Surveillance Studies Centre, an international, interdisciplinary research hub examining diverse topics from retail loyalty programs to law enforcement tracking systems. Additionally, we partner with various university departments such as Development Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and Kinesiology and Health Studies.
This research group explores digital sociologies, including critical examinations of modern media, data systems, information technologies, and networks. Topics like social platforms, visual media, intelligent devices, and digital footprints fall within this group's scope. The field integrates and expands upon feminist theory, science-and-technology studies, and cultural studies. Over the last thirty years, members have gained recognition for groundbreaking, award-winning research on Canada's communication history, critiques of the "information age," studies of digital inequality globally, and the swift expansion of digital monitoring. Contributions from fields like cultural geography, philosophy, and history enrich this cluster, which maintains strong ties with the Surveillance Studies Centre.
