The Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University has built a distinguished reputation for its graduate programs. With an intimate learning environment, we offer students personalized attention while drawing on our faculty's diverse expertise and acclaimed research to deliver comprehensive training for various career paths. Our department is especially renowned for its focus on ethnically diverse and divided societies. The M.A. program sharpens analytical abilities, while the Ph.D. prepares students for academic careers or leadership roles in political studies-related fields. Most students secure teaching assistantships, and we actively promote conference participation with travel funding. Research assistantships are frequently available, and faculty members assist with fieldwork and professional networking in both Canadian and international academic and policy circles.
Queen's Political Theory program focuses on modern normative theory, blending analytical and critical continental approaches. Our theorists explore diverse themes such as: justice and equality; power dynamics and social resistance; identity politics and multiculturalism; democratic governance; ideal versus practical theory; health ethics and well-being; gender and sexuality studies; feminist and queer perspectives; nationalism and land rights; global ethics; moral philosophy; and liberal political thought. This vibrant field boasts faculty with numerous research grants and an expanding global profile.
