The Political Studies Department at Queen's University has built a strong reputation for its graduate education offerings. Our intimate program size allows for tailored academic experiences, supported by a distinguished and diverse faculty whose research excellence ensures comprehensive training for various career paths. We're especially renowned for our expertise in examining ethnically diverse and divided societies. The M.A. curriculum sharpens analytical abilities, while the Ph.D. program equips students for academic careers or leadership positions in political studies-related fields. Teaching assistantships are available to most students, and we actively promote conference participation with travel funding assistance. Research assistantships with faculty members are common, and we strongly support field research initiatives while facilitating connections in both Canadian and international academic and policy networks.
Those pursuing International Relations studies, including Foreign Policy Analysis and International Political Economy, will encounter faculty with diverse scholarly interests. Students benefit from engaged mentorship across various theoretical and empirical challenges in global affairs, spanning both developed and developing regions. Our department fosters active research partnerships with graduate students, including co-authorship opportunities, grant collaborations, and joint publications. We maintain strong ties with the Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP), led by our faculty member Dr. Stéfanie von Hlatky. The CIDP hosts vibrant research initiatives and events, frequently offering graduate students opportunities to engage in seminars and conferences.
