Art history involves the methodical and analytical exploration of how visual creations, artifacts, and environments influence and reflect societal values. This discipline fundamentally examines humanity's engagement with constructed, artistic, and crafted works across various mediums. Beyond understanding their origins, we investigate how these creations operated within their cultural contexts and their ongoing impact on contemporary society. Queen's University approaches art, material culture, and artistic institutions through global, multicultural, and interdisciplinary lenses. Our graduate programs provide specialized education in visual and material culture studies spanning from medieval times to modernity. The Art History department at Queen's emphasizes personalized guidance, equipping students with diverse analytical frameworks that encompass art conservation, gender analysis, theoretical critique, cultural expression, and intersections between art, literature, and scientific inquiry.
