The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is an interdisciplinary academic unit where students can acquire language skills, explore diverse literary and cultural traditions, and engage in Linguistics studies. The Department provides language instruction in Anishinaabemowin, Arabic, Chinese, German, Hebrew, Inuktitut, Italian, Japanese, Mohawk, Portuguese, and Spanish, along with degree programs in German Studies; Indigenous Studies; Italian; Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Linguistics; Hispanic Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; and World Language Studies. Following its 2011 merger, the Department introduced LLCU courses to meet evolving student demands and expand elective options. These courses emphasize analytical thinking and cultural discourse from a global viewpoint, frequently incorporating language learning components. Since their inception, these courses have consistently attracted strong enrollment and student engagement at Queen's. While some courses run annually, others rotate every two years. Language study equips students for international travel, work, or residence while enhancing their communication abilities in Canada's diverse society. Degrees centered on languages, literatures, cultures, or Linguistics equip graduates with versatile skills highly valued in today's interconnected world. The Department actively promotes international study experiences for students across all its programs through Queen's global initiatives.
