The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is an interdisciplinary academic unit where students can study foreign languages, explore diverse literary and cultural traditions, and engage in Linguistics research. The Department provides language instruction in Anishinaabemowin, Arabic, Chinese, German, Hebrew, Inuktitut, Italian, Japanese, Mohawk, Portuguese, and Spanish, along with degree programs in German Studies; Indigenous Studies; Italian; Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Linguistics; Hispanic Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; and World Language Studies.
Following its 2011 reorganization, the Department introduced LLCU courses to better serve evolving student interests and expand elective options. These courses emphasize analytical thinking and cross-cultural discussions from global viewpoints, frequently combining cultural studies with language learning. Since their inception, these courses have consistently attracted strong enrollment and student enthusiasm at Queen's University. While some courses run annually, others rotate every two years.
