The Department specializes in exploring the history, theory, and analysis of film, television, and digital media, while providing hands-on training in film, video, and digital production. By studying cinema and television, we engage with broader themes like power dynamics, ideology, communication, artistic expression, marketing, consumer behavior, economics, and audience engagement. We investigate how other art forms—such as literature, visual arts, music, and architecture—influence film and television, and we analyze the relationship between cultural institutions and the media industry.
While Film and Media is primarily an Arts (rather than Fine Arts) discipline, media production plays a key role in our program, serving as a vital tool for fostering cultural understanding and proficiency in visual, auditory, and technical storytelling. Our approach to production combines artistic creativity with a deep knowledge of film history, theory, and critique, alongside a sharp awareness of societal and cultural contexts. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with diverse skills, preparing them for careers not only in film and television but also in various other professional fields.
