The English Department provides an extensive undergraduate curriculum that introduces students to English literature from diverse communities, time periods, and global locations. All three program options (Major, Joint Honours, Minor) strive to maintain equilibrium between examining established authors, literary styles, and conventions while also exploring works that were historically overlooked or unrecognized. This curriculum promotes intercultural and historical understanding by motivating students to interact with literary works from varied backgrounds and traditions using multiple academic perspectives. The Joint Honours program in English provides identical opportunities to the Major—exploring timeless works of fiction, poetry, and theater alongside contemporary genres like young adult fiction and speculative works, as well as modern mediums such as illustrated narratives—though with a reduced course load and more flexible historical study requirements. This option still provides significant opportunities to expand your appreciation of literary works across cultures and eras while engaging with diverse perspectives in modern society.
